So, you’ve decided to pursue law? Congratulations! You’re stepping into one of the most prestigious, socially respected, and rewarding careers out there.
But have you thought about which area of law you’d like to explore?
Today, law isn’t confined to courtrooms—it extends to boardrooms as well. In fact, many of today’s most lucrative legal professions are centered around business and commerce. The good news is that you don’t need to spend years earning separate degrees in business and law. If you’ve completed Plus Two, you can join a Business-Integrated LLB program, which saves you a year and gives you a powerful head start toward careers like corporate lawyer, legal advisor, compliance officer, or tax consultant, among others.
Now comes the big question: Which college is right for you? With so many options across Kerala, the choice can feel like a trial in itself. To help you out, here are the key things you must look for before you hit that ‘Apply’ button on any college website.
1. Is the college approved and affiliated?
First and foremost, confirm that the college is officially recognized. Without approval from the Bar Council of India (BCI), you cannot enroll as an advocate or practice law in court after graduation. It is equally important to ensure that the institution is affiliated with a recognized university, as this validates your degree and ensures academic standards.
2. Does the college offer the right law program?
If you see your future in the corporate legal space, look for a college that offers specialized business-integrated LLB programs. These degrees blend law with management or commerce, which is what modern recruiters look for.
- BBA LLB: Ideal if you are interested in corporate law, management, or entrepreneurship.
- B.Com LLB: Perfect if you are inclined toward taxation, auditing, or financial litigation.
3. Does the college provide practical legal training?
Law cannot be mastered through textbooks alone. Look for colleges that actively conduct Moot Court competitions, legal workshops, and court visits. Real-world exposure is what transforms a student into a confident, courtroom-ready lawyer.
4. Do the faculty offer good mentorship?
Since a law program spans several years, you need mentors, not just teachers—faculty who combine academic knowledge with practical legal experience. Choose a college that offers a student-friendly environment where faculty members are approachable for both academic and career guidance.
5. Does the college support internships and placements?
A law degree gains real value through the opportunities it creates. Check if the college has a dedicated Career & Placement Cell and provides structured internship support with courts, law firms, and corporate organizations.
6. Does the campus have the right facilities?
Professional education requires a professional environment. A well-equipped campus should include a comprehensive library, access to digital legal databases, a dedicated Moot Court Hall, and a cafeteria where students can relax and spend time during breaks.
Apart from that, it should also be able to accommodate students from across the country with proper hostel facilities.
7. Is the campus environment conducive to learning?
You will spend several important years at your law college, so the overall environment matters. Look for a campus that offers a supportive academic atmosphere along with essential facilities such as hostels, transport, and Wi-Fi access. Accessibility is equally important—the college should be located in a place that allows easy access to courts and legal institutions, helping you learn beyond the classroom.
